What Do I Need to Know About the Phase-Out of R22 Refrigerant?

Starting on January 1, 2020, the EPA’s decade-long phase-out of common refrigerant R22 reached its final stage. Known more commonly as Freon, this coolant may no longer legally be manufactured or imported. The ban was implemented due to R22’s damaging impact on the ozone layer, but what does this mean for the many Americans whose homes depend on it?

Some Action Required

It is important to note here that continuing to use R22 is not prohibited. Your air conditioning or heat pump system that runs on this coolant is free to do so for as long as the supply lasts. Once the system runs out of refrigerant, however, you have some decisions to make.

There are three main options available to you once this happens:

• Wait it out and purchase from the remaining R22 supply when needed: While there is still limited availability of R22, this is not a course that we would recommend – particularly as a long-term strategy. The cost of R22 is already increasing steadily and will mean that any relatively minor refrigerant leak is sure to be a prohibitively costly repair.
• Use alternative refrigerants: Unfortunately, while there are alternatives to R22 available, they are new enough to the market that they have not been manufacturer tested and will void your manufacturer warranty. It is also certainly not as simple as topping off the tank with the alternative! Refrigerants should never be mixed, and different refrigerants have different requirements from lubricating oils as well.
• Upgrade to a newer AC system: In our opinion, this is the best path for homeowners in the long-term. Newer models are far more efficient and reliable, helping you save both on monthly bills and repair costs, and run on refrigerants with a far gentler impact on the environment.
